Objective

Implement conservation measures and monitoring of bufeo dolphin population (Tursiops truncatus) at the Wildlife Refuge El Morro, province of Guayas.


Project Details

The project will be applied at the Wildlife Refuge “El Morro”, Gulf of Guayaquil, province of Guayas. This zone is internationally known for its bufeo dolphin population. The purpose of the project is to establish measures to manage and mitigate the impacts that the dolphin population is experiencing as a result of human actions in its habitat.


Technical description of the Project

  • Bufeo dolphins are present in the zone; adults usually are between 2.5 to 3.2 m. in length
  • There are 7 communities in the Gulf of Guayaquil, the population in this area is small with a decreasing trend
  • The existing and future infrastructure in this area might have direct and significant effect on the habitat of this species, putting at risk their survival and viability of optimum population levels
